Editorial Director of Growth

Quartz is seeking an editor to oversee its Growth team and guide the next phase of its development. Their mandate will be to help grow Quartz’s global audience on existing platforms, create and implement strategies for new platforms, and work closely with newsroom leadership to reach performance goals.

The editor will be responsible for running and managing Quartz’s team of growth editors. The successful candidate will establish quantitative and qualitative goals for the team, as well as help members develop individually as journalists and professionals. The director of growth will in turn help shape the broader editorial process to adapt to new audiences and be part of a team of editors that defines and guides Quartz’s editorial strategy.   

The director of growth should be immersed in the social conversation, be adept at SEO, comfortable brokering partnerships, fluent in mining data for takeaways, and have strong instincts for the stories that audiences find engaging. They will be adept at juggling short- and  long-term goals, identifying ways to help the team do its work effectively and efficiently, and ensuring that strategies and best practices are clearly communicated. This editor is at their best working collaboratively—whether it’s brainstorming new ideas and helping writers and editors hone theirs, or working with our product and community teams. The successful candidate will get a kick out of taking other people’s work and making it shine.

The position requires someone who has management skills, a facility with data, and an entrepreneurial approach to their work. Candidates should have at least three to five years of professional experience in digital journalism.

Responsibilities include:

  • Work with product, analytics, and the managing editor to develop high-level strategies for retaining and growing the Quartz audience
  • Develop strategies to find niche audiences for Quartz’s coverage and editions.
  • Work with writers and editors to identify stories to cover, collaborate on story framings and headlines, and advise on story packaging
  • Work with our video journalists to help identify and grow audience for our films, as well as identify ways Quartz can use video to drive deeper engagement
  • Work with Quartz’s Special Projects and its Membership teams to plan and execute campaigns around editorial projects, series and premium content.
  • Train writers and editors social media, SEO, and other digital best practices
  • Develop and maintain relationships with external publishing partners like Facebook, Twitter, Google and YouTube.
  • Use data to report regular results, identify new opportunities, and share relevant findings with the newsroom.
  • Oversee the programming and curation of Quartz’s social channels, including by developing strategies to promote Quartz’s writers on social and in appropriate digital channels.
