Quartz seeks a reporter to lead its coverage of China’s rapidly changing technology sector, with a focus on producing original takes on the news and analysis.
Based in Hong Kong, you would be part of the growing Quartz team worldwide, and help shape our efforts to take a bracingly creative approach to covering business news within a global context. Developing fresh ways to look at technology and tech trends and translating them into interesting, provocative articles is a central challenge of this job.
This position will focus on companies and people based in mainland China. It will look at the changing fortunes and strategies of giants like Alibaba, Tencent, and Huawei, track the next generation of startups like SenseTime, Bytedance, and Pinduoduo, and tell the stories of the people leading them.
We’d like you to tell readers how developments around these companies illustrate the larger themes central to coverage of China’s technology sector, like the tense (but entangled) US-China tech relationship, the advance and export of surveillance and censorship technologies (and efforts to evade these), and the complicated relations between tech companies and the Party.
Along the way, we’d look to you to explain to our readers what it’s like to interact with technology as a consumer and a citizen in China, and how mobile phones and apps shape daily life. We'd want you to be both excited about the potential of technology as well as critical—and creative—in your coverage of it.
We understand this is a broad canvas, and we’d be looking for you to harness your own reporting strengths while pinpointing the developments that Quartz should be obsessing about at any given time, and focus your attention there.
The successful candidate will have:
The reporter should be excited about the opportunity to write across the range of formats other than a 700 word story (such as shorter pieces, photos, and charts), and be excited about writing daily and quickly.
Mandarin proficiency is vital for the role, and China reporting experience is a plus.
