Qualitative Research Manager

Ballast Research (a division of National Journal) is a research and consulting firm that helps government affairs professionals build, deepen, and advance their advocacy efforts at the federal and state levels.

Ballast Research conducts hundreds of interviews each year to understand perceptions of policymakers and other key stakeholders, a core component of our work that informs subsequent insight generation and consultative guidance. We are seeking a Qualitative Research Manager to oversee and advance the firm’s various qualitative research projects. The ideal candidate is interested in improving processes, has strong project management skills, and is looking to contribute to a collaborative, fast-paced, and innovative work environment.

Core responsibilities include:

  • Managing each qualitative research project from beginning to end, including:
  • Working alongside the Client Service team to scope and refine clients’ qualitative research objectives
  • Writing and aggregating interview guides that effectively translate and balance individual client objectives
  • Collaborating with the Outreach team to ensure we are sourcing sufficient quality interviews to answer client questions
  • Developing a process for (and then overseeing) the scheduling, execution, and processing of interviews while in the field
  • Conducting interviews, as needed
  • Monitoring and continuously adjusting the process to ensure we are tracking toward our qualitative research goals
  • Training and coaching Analysts to effectively conduct in-depth research interviews
  • Developing and training around qualitative research tools, such as interview trackers and data processing software like Dedoose and NVivo
  • Directing the work of a Qualitative Research Assistant, to assist with the execution of qualitative research plans
  • Contributing to larger conversations about how to improve and deepen our qualitative research
  • Developing new research methods and processes to innovate on the qualitative research process to best meet client needs

Core qualifications include:

  • Extensive project management experience
  • Experience conducting qualitative research projects from beginning to end
  • Experience coordinating and managing across teams and stakeholder groups
  • Interest in working in a collaborative environment
  • A keen eye for detail
  • A strong ability to multitask
