The Atlantic is seeking an experienced, ambitious editor to be based in Washington, D.C., to help lead its international desk.
This journalist will be part of a growing team, with reporters currently based in Washington, London, and Paris; will help formulate coverage plans across a wide range of beats related to U.S. foreign policy and global news; and will help build a team of reporters, freelancers, and contractors focused on the forces reshaping foreign affairs, international relationships, and democracy worldwide.
The ideal candidate will be a creative and independent thinker who is obsessed with global news, and adept at working with a geographically dispersed team of journalists. You should have impeccable editorial judgment, a sense of urgency about breaking news, a non-stop flow of original ideas, a keen understanding of how to assign and edit a second-day story on the first day, and a well-honed instinct for identifying the big questions underlying complex developing stories—from those unfolding over a matter of hours, to ones that span months and years. You should also be equipped to shape and edit complex magazine-style narratives. Excellent communication skills are a must.
