Senior Associate Editor: The Battle for the Constitution

The Atlantic is seeking a resourceful, entrepreneurial editor to commission, review, and edit stories on the Constitution and the debates that surround it. This is an 18-month position, running from June 2019 to December 2020. The editor will have primary responsibility for “The Battle for the Constitution,” an editorial project of The Atlantic produced in partnership with the National Constitution Center. The editor will be expected to partner with writers offering a full range of viewpoints on fiercely contested constitutional questions, ensuring that the resulting stories have depth, integrity, and style. This position is based in Washington, D.C.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Assigning stories on constitutional issues
  • Editing stories of a variety of lengths, from real-time analysis to detailed essays
  • Building the diversity of contributors and perspectives

Qualifications:

  • Experience editing stories for general audiences
  • Demonstrated fluency with legal terms and constitutional concepts
  • Editorial imagination and force of intellect
  • Commitment to airing a variety of arguments
  • Exceptional facility with written language
