Senior Producer, Podcasts

The Atlantic has, for more than 160 years, advanced ideas that matter and sparked global conversation on the most important issues of our time. We aim to bring clarity and original thinking to questions of consequence, on topics ranging from politics, the economy, and global affairs to technology, science, and culture. As the third-longest-running magazine in America, we find ourselves at a remarkable moment: one of both continuation and transformation, of upholding our legacy while continuously reinventing ourselves for the future.

We are working on ambitious new audio projects at the Atlantic, and we’re looking for an experienced producer and editor to join our team. This position is an opportunity to help build and shape an expanding portfolio of podcasts. The person we have in mind has a versatile skillset and is capable of running shows and creating across a number of formats, from two-ways to deeply reported audio narratives. You should be a pro at all the basics: producing an engaging interview, prepping and tracking hosts, reporting and recording in the field, cutting tape, assembling sessions, and mixing. But you should also have high-level experience structuring stories, shaping scripts, and executing a clear vision for a show. We are looking for someone with a sharp sense of the podcast landscape and creative ideas for how to translate the Atlantic’s journalistic strengths into audio.

Key responsibilities:

  • Provide high-level direction on podcast, series, and episode concepts.
  • Work with hosts and Atlantic journalists to conceive and execute stories and episodes.
  • Plan and produce episodes from soup to nuts, from booking guests to to editing scripts.
  • Work on all aspects of audio production as necessary, including recording, cutting tape, assembling, mixing, and publication.
  • Support Executive Producer in supervising production staff and contractors.

You have:

  • 7+ years producing radio or podcasts
  • Familiarity with working with hosts
  • Experience reporting for audio
  • Experience with script-writing, editing, and shaping narrative stories
  • Total comfort working in ProTools
  • Ability to create within different formats and styles

Atlantic Media Values:
Across Atlantic Media, generally, the firm looks for two “pillar gifts” in you, and everyone else.  In all of us, these are more aspirational than actual, but they are central in our intentions –

  • Force of Ideas:  At the center of Atlantic Media work are the ideas within our writing.  We believe that ideas – to the good and not – have consequence.  Our highest work is bringing rigor, insight, intellectual honesty, to that ultimate purpose of separating the bad from the good, and giving voice to the latter.
  • Spirit of Generosity:  Atlantic Media seeks in its ranks a spirit of generosity – a natural disposition in each colleague toward service and selfless conduct.  Atlantic Media writing should be cut from the same cloth –critical on the merits but informed by charity and forbearance in measuring motive and personal character.

Atlantic Media is an EOE of Minorities/Women/Vets/Disability.

Pursuant to the San Francisco Fair Chance Ordinance, we will consider for employment qualified applicants with arrest and conviction records.
