Quartz seeks a deputy editor to help produce its global coverage of science and healthcare, with bracing creativity and ambition. The deputy editor will bring energy and curiosity to their work, assisting the science editor and deftly guiding reporters through every stage of the journalistic process.
We are looking for someone with professional editing and reporting experience, a facility with data, an entrepreneurial approach to their work, and the ability to convey curiosity and humor. Developing fresh ways to address the important scientific questions of our age, and quickly translating them into interesting, provocative articles with a solid grounding in data, is a central challenge of this job. We'd look to you to identify people who deserve more attention, and see around corners to where science and medicine are heading. We'd want you to be both excited about the fundamental potential of science and medicine and thoughtful, critical, and creative in your coverage of them.
Specifically, this editor will work with reporters to develop story ideas and distinctive approaches to covering news as well as edit daily stories. They should feel comfortable with formats other than 700-word articles (such as shorter pieces, photos, and charts) when they’re better for efficiently and effectively getting a story across. The editor will also have their own areas of intellectual and journalistic interest and write regularly, as time allows.
The successful candidate will demonstrate an interest in topics ranging from the application of big data in healthcare, to brain-computer interfaces and the future of what we eat. They might edit stories on geothermal energy startups, the history of ketamine as a depression treatment or the philosophical basis of suing your parents for being born.
International experience and languages are a plus. This role is best suited to someone based in London or New York.
