Quartz seeks an editor to work on our popular email newsletter, the Quartz Obsession, a daily deep dive into a fascinating corner of the global economy. The newsletter uses a variety of multimedia and interactive elements including charts, images, gifs, videos, quizzes, and polls. Encyclopedic in scope, it takes readers down a rabbit hole in a pleasurable, easy-to-digest format.
Day to day, you'll be responsible for a number of duties, including researching, writing, producing, and editing. You will hone the arc of the narrative of each newsletter to ensure it’s clear, concise, and Quartz-y. You will determine which elements should be included in order to tell a story that's well-rounded in both form and content, and make sure the final copy is clean and error-free. You're well suited for this role if you have an appetite for big ideas and in-depth stories, as well as a sense of humor and a knack for a well-placed emoji.
You will relish making prose shine line by line, but will also be able to look at the big picture to make sure the reader gets a payoff. You will be versed in basic visual storytelling, able to pick and source, or create, good gifs and images, and turn data into compelling charts.
You won't just be working on other people's stories; you'll frequently write your own. You should be excited about conducting your own research and reporting and able to craft compelling copy quickly.
This role will be particularly rewarding if you have a high media metabolism and an interest in business and the global economy. As part of Quartz's push team, you will also contribute to some of its other products, including the Quartz app, Quartz Index, Quartz bot studio, and Quartz Daily Brief.
To apply, please send a cover letter, your resume and five samples of your writing. Qualified candidates will be asked to take an editing test.
