The Atlantic is looking for an experienced editor to oversee our growing politics team.
This journalist will direct coverage of the White House, Congress, national security, and elections; manage two deputy editors and a team of reporters; lead story-planning across a wide range of beats across national politics; and collaborate with other Atlantic platforms, including its print magazine.
The ideal candidate will be a creative and independent thinker who is obsessed with politics and policy, and energized by the chaos of a busy news day. You should have impeccable editorial judgment, a sense of urgency about breaking news, a keen understanding of how to assign and edit a second-day story on the first day, and a natural instinct for identifying the big questions underlying complex developing stories—including stories unfolding over a matter of hours, and those that span months and years. You should also be equipped to shape and edit complex magazine-style narratives.
This position is based in Washington, D.C.
