National Journal’s Presentation Center analyzes, distills, and visualizes political and policy developments in charts, slides, and decks. Our team is growing and seeks a collaborative individual to carry out policy research, produce polished graphical presentations, and manage custom member requests. The Presentation Center produces policy research on the latest happenings in Washington, publishing content exclusively for senior public policy practitioners and government affairs executives from the corporate, association, and non-profit worlds.

This position, which blends traditional research, publication, and consulting/advisory roles, demands a high intellectual metabolism. The ideal applicant will have experience carrying out in-depth research, translating complex policies and datasets into elegant written and visual summaries, and producing client deliverables.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Creating high-quality presentations based on primary data sources and secondary news sources
  • Producing custom deliverables for members based on research requests
  • Explaining public policy issues for a non-Washington audience
  • Synthesizing and analyzing quantitative data from public sources and think tanks
  • Producing data-driven charts, maps, and graphics
  • Contextualizing and interpreting research findings within larger ideas, topics, and trends
  • Extracting key insights from research for an executive audience and conveying them in clear, concise written summaries
  • Developing expertise in particular subject matter areas, like infrastructure, trade, or the federal budget
  • Helping junior researchers to clarify and shape their research findings and ideas

Qualifications of the Ideal Candidate:

  • Excellent academic record
  • Demonstrated interest in public policy and politics
  • Experience synthesizing quantitative/qualitative research and analyzing and visualizing data
  • Ability to distill large amounts of information into concise bullets, charts, and graphics
  • A skilled project manager, able to independently manage competing priorities and adhere to timelines
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint
  • Previous experience with data visualization programs (such as Tableau), graphic design software (like Photoshop), or VBA would be a plus
  • Previous experience or interest in one or more of the following would also be a plus: energy and environment, infrastructure and public works, technology, cybersecurity, defense, government affairs, and legislative or executive agency policymaking
