Strategy Research Associate

National Journal serves government affairs and advocacy offices with research and insights to help them save time and be more effective at their jobs. The Leadership Council is National Journal’s membership program, delivering value to members with research studies, tools, and in-person consultations. Our research and insights focus on the verbs of advocacy, such as how to build an effective grassroots program, reach policymakers with insightful content, or design an organization structure. Understanding our members’ most pressing needs is at the core of our work. We conduct hundreds of interviews and perform root cause analysis to uncover best practices and insights. These are then shared with members through events, in-person meetings, and on our members-only website.

Strategy Research Associates work on a small team conducting research, analyzing findings, and building content to share our findings. A typical day as an associate might include interviewing a VP of government affairs at a member organization about their management challenges; analyzing interview notes to determine the root cause of a common member problem; and designing a guide to help members engage with the public on social media. Associates will have daily, direct exposure to program leadership.

Core Attributes:

  • Force of Ideas -- At the center of Atlantic Media work are the ideas within our writing.  We believe that ideas – to the good and not – have consequence.  Our highest work is bringing rigor, insight, intellectual honesty, to that ultimate purpose of separating the bad from the good, giving voice, argument, and flight to the latter.
  • Spirit of Generosity -- Atlantic Media seeks in its ranks a spirit of generosity – a natural disposition in each colleague toward service and selfless conduct.  Atlantic Media writing should be cut from the same cloth – critical on the merits but informed by charity and forbearance in measuring motive and personal character.
